Our Story

Brittany and Oliver met at a BBQ in Brooklyn, Memorial Day Weekend in 2017. The BBQ was hosted by their mutual friend, Jason Spear. Oliver traveled up to NYC from Washington, D.C. Brittany also happened to be hosting her good friend, Farrah Holifield, that same weekend, who was also in town from D.C. They decided to stop by the BBQ to say hello. Jason's gathering brought lots of friends together to celebrate the holiday weekend and the unofficial transition from spring to summer. When Brittany walked into the party, she went to the kitchen to drop off food, while Farrah began asking everyone at the party where they were from. From a distance, Brittany heard Oliver say he’s from East Atlanta. Brittany then turned around and screamed, “I grew up in East Atlanta!”

Brittany and Oliver instantly struck up a conversation that ended up lasting almost four hours in the kitchen. They talked about everything from growing up in Georgia, music, living in Washington D.C., working for President Obama, film, and so much more. Oliver discovered that Brittany was actually born in Louisville, Kentucky and moved to Atlanta, Georgia when she was eight, and that she actually didn’t grow up in “East Atlanta,” but the eastern suburbs of Atlanta. After a quick geography lesson from Oliver, their conversation continued well into the evening. According to Oliver, Brittany has been his girlfriend since that day and they haven't looked back since. However, Brittany believes that they didn't begin dating exclusively until their third week together, when they traveled to Miami and the Bahamas. Since then, they have been together for almost four years!

In case you didn't know, Oliver proposed twice! The first proposal was without a ring on their first anniversary celebrations, on May 26, 2018, at the Bearded Lady in Brooklyn, New York. The proposal completely caught Brittany off guard. They stopped for drinks, just before their anniversary dinner. After they ordered, Oliver took Brittany’s hands, proceeded to tell her how much he loved her, how much joy she brought to his life, and how he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, as his wife. Then he asked Brittany if she would be his “forever partner.” Brittany hit Oliver’s shoulder, looked around for a camera crew and asked, “Are you joking? Is this for real? Are you serious?” Oliver responded, “Yes baby, yes!” Brittany responded, of course, "I’d love to be your wife and spend the rest of my life with you!"

The second proposal happened over dinner on January 23, 2019, in Washington, D.C. Brittany was so surprised! That is, for the first proposal. She knew the second proposal was coming, since they had worked together to design her engagement ring, but she didn’t know when it was coming. As they sat down for dinner, Oliver leaned down next to the coffee table. He got down on both knees this time, instead of one. He took her hand and asked, “Brittany LaRee' will you do me the honor of being my wife?” Brittany nodded her head yes and started crying tears of joy. Oliver then said, “I can’t hear you. You have to actually say yes in order to get the ring - nodding doesn’t count. I need to hear you say yes.” Brittany responded through her tears, “Yes Oliver Spurgeon III, I would be delighted to be your wife.”

Throughout the span of their relationship, travel has been a uniting thread and a common love. For Brittany's 35th birthday they traveled to Saint Lucia and were instantly overwhelmed by the island's intense beauty. Saint Lucia's joyous residents, unmatched scenery, and serene surroundings left the couple spellbound. It was also the first opportunity for Brittany or Oliver to visit a country that neither one of them had explored before. After a second trip to Saint Lucia months later where the couple learned the origins of "let her inspire you," the island nation's unofficial motto, they committed to getting married in Saint Lucia - one of two islands in the world named after a woman.

Brittany and Oliver originally scheduled a micro-wedding on May 16, 2020, and a 150 person reception on August 8, 2020. However, they were forced to postpone both celebrations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally on July 25,2020, after several PCR tests to ensure they were free of the coronavirus, filling out a preregistration form, & adhering to strict guidelines of the island, the lovely couple, surrounded by fourteen of their closest family and friends, held their intimate wedding ceremony at a private Beachfront Collection Villa at the Sugar Beach Viceroy Resort. The service was led by ministers Kenisha Brown Alexander, cousin of the bride, and Andrew Lee, the groom's best friend.

The couple is excited for their new journey together as husband and wife. The lovely couple has officially made New York their home & recently became members of Emanuel Baptist Church in Brooklyn.
